Custom embroidery is a textile decoration technique that doesn't apply ink to fabric, but instead builds the design directly with stitched thread. An industrial multi-head embroidery machine reproduces the design stitch by stitch, guided by a digital file that tells the needle exactly where to pass, with which thread, and in what order. The result is a design with physical relief and texture, one you can touch and that becomes part of the garment's own structure, not a surface layer added on top.

Unlike textile printing techniques, embroidery doesn't reproduce an image through dots of ink, but through lines and fills of stitching that a digitising program translates from the original design. There's no textile customisation technique that's objectively "the best" in every case. Each one solves one type of project well and another less well. This comparison is genuine informational content, with no bias towards any particular technique: the goal is for you to choose with real judgement, not for us to convince you embroidery is always the right answer.

Embroidery

Embroidery sews the design with thread directly onto the fabric. Its strength is durability and a premium, textured look: it holds up very well through repeated washing, doesn't crack or peel the way a layer of ink or vinyl can, and conveys a sense of quality we naturally associate with uniforms, workwear and sportswear. Its main limitation is that it doesn't reproduce photographic designs, many colours, gradients or very fine detail well: thread has a minimum physical thickness, and every extra colour means a bobbin change, so logos with few colours and clean lines work best. It's also not the most economical option for very small runs of a complex design, since every design first needs a digitising process.

DTF (Direct to Film)

DTF prints the design in full colour onto a special film and then heat-transfers it onto the garment. Its big advantage is colour fidelity: it reproduces photographs, gradients and multi-colour designs with no extra cost per colour, something embroidery and screen printing can't match. It works well on cotton and blends, and allows short runs with almost no setup cost. Its limitation is that, being a layer of ink transferred onto the fabric's surface, it has a more plastic-like feel than embroidery, and after many washes or ironing at the wrong temperature it can eventually crack or lose shine sooner than a well-executed embroidery.

Screen printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh or screen, one for each colour in the design. It's the most cost-efficient technique for large runs of a design with few flat colours: the more units, the better the screen setup cost is amortised. The finish, when properly cured, is very durable and feels well integrated into the fabric. Its limitation is the exact opposite of DTF: every extra colour means an extra screen, so multi-colour or gradient designs become much more expensive, and it's not a technique suited to very short runs or individual customisation (names, numbers) within the same order.

Vinyl transfer

Vinyl transfer is cut into coloured sheets and applied with heat to the garment, layer by layer if the design has several colours. It's the most practical option for customising single units or small quantities — a name and number on a team t-shirt, for example — without needing to prepare any screen or digitise anything. Its limitation is that complex, multi-colour designs stack overlapping layers of vinyl, which thickens the final feel and can reduce the garment's breathability; it's not the most suitable technique for reproducing photographic images or large runs of an elaborate design.

In short, no bias

If your design is a logo with few colours and you want maximum durability and a premium, textured finish, embroidery is usually the best option. If the design has photography, gradients or many colours, DTF reproduces it better. If you need a large run of a design with few flat colours, screen printing is the most cost-efficient. If you need to customise individual units with names or numbers, vinyl transfer is the most practical. None wins across the board: the right choice depends on the design, the quantity and the intended use of the garment.

Beyond choosing a technique, there are technical decisions within embroidery itself that a good supplier makes for you and that directly affect the final result. These aren't marketing figures — they're real criteria for how a well-made embroidery is produced.

Thread type: polyester vs. rayon

Polyester thread is the most common in everyday industrial embroidery: it holds colour better through frequent washing and cleaning products like diluted bleach, making it the default choice for uniforms and workwear. Rayon thread has more sheen and a slightly different drape, much appreciated on decorative or fashion pieces, but it's more delicate against aggressive washing. Thread choice isn't just aesthetic — it depends on the garment's real use.

Stitch types

Satin stitch is used for lettering, outlines and fine detail because it produces a dense, glossy line. Fill or tatami stitch covers large areas of solid colour with a criss-cross pattern that stops the fabric from bunching. Running/outline stitch is reserved for very fine detail or to fix the outline before filling. An expert digitiser combines all three stitch types depending on each area of the logo, rather than applying the same stitch type across the whole design.

Stabiliser or backing

Before sewing, a backing is placed under the fabric so it can withstand the tension of the thread without puckering. The type varies by fabric: one that's removed after sewing for stable fabrics like drill or twill, one that stays permanently for stretchy or knit fabrics that need continuous support, and a water-soluble one for embroidery on pieces where no visible backing residue should remain. Choosing the wrong stabiliser is one of the most common causes of embroidery that looks poor, even when the digitised design itself is correct.

Stitch density by fabric

The number of stitches per area isn't the same for a thick pique polo as for a panama-weave cap or a thin technical garment: too much density on a thin fabric pulls and distorts it, and too little on a thick fabric leaves gaps in the fill. Adjusting density to the specific fabric — not using a generic stitch file for any garment — is another of those details that sets well-manufactured embroidery apart from something produced on autopilot.

3. Which garments and materials embroidery works best on

Embroidery doesn't behave the same way on every fabric, and being honest about this is part of good advice. It works especially well on thick, structurally stable fabrics: polos, hoodies, jackets, workwear, caps and canvas or nylon bags and backpacks. On these materials the thread anchors firmly, the garment supports the physical weight of the embroidery well, and the relief stays well defined without distorting the fabric.

On thin, stretchy or very lightweight fabrics — fine-knit t-shirts, technical stretch sportswear — embroidery may need a backing stabiliser underneath so the design doesn't pull or bunch the fabric, and in some cases the final result can feel stiffer in that area than the rest of the garment. This doesn't mean embroidery is impossible on these fabrics, but it's worth knowing the behaviour isn't identical to that of a thick cotton polo or hoodie, and that DTF or vinyl transfer may be worth considering on very stretchy or very thin garments.

So, before deciding on the technique, the first thing to look at isn't the design but the garment: how thick it is, whether it's a rigid or stretchy fabric, and what real use it will have. A small logo on the chest of a work polo is a textbook embroidery case. A large, photographic image on a technical running t-shirt is, almost always, better solved with DTF.

4. Durability: how long an embroidered logo really lasts

Durability, along with the premium look, is the main reason companies choose embroidery for uniforms and frequently used clothing. Since it's sewn with thread rather than applied as a surface layer, embroidery doesn't crack or peel the way a poorly cured print or a badly applied vinyl can after years of washing. The thread used in industrial embroidery is designed to withstand washing, drying and repeated use without noticeably losing shape or colour under normal garment care.

That said, no textile customisation technique is eternal or immune to wear: the real lifespan of any embroidery, print or vinyl also depends on how the garment is washed and ironed, the quality of the base fabric, and how often it's used. A logo in a design file (vector or image) can't be sewn directly: it first needs to be converted into a stitch file through a process called digitising. A digitiser interprets each element of the logo and decides what type of stitch to use in each area (fill, outline, satin), in what order to sew each colour, and what thread density to apply so the design keeps its shape without bunching or puckering the fabric.

This step is why, for embroidery, it's worth simplifying the design where possible: logos with very small text, extremely fine lines or too many distinct colours are harder to digitise faithfully, and the final result can lose legibility if the design isn't adapted before stitching. A good digitising process isn't a simple automatic image-to-stitch conversion — it's a technical interpretation of the design meant to look good sewn on fabric, not just on screen.

If you only have a rasterised image (JPG or PNG), send it at the highest resolution available: the smaller or more pixelated the original image, the harder it is to interpret the design's exact contours precisely.

Simplify the number of colours

Every colour in the design is a different thread bobbin and a machine change. A logo with two or three well-defined colours sews more faithfully and more economically than one with six or seven similar shades. If your current logo has many shades of the same colour, consider whether a version simplified to your core brand colours would work just as well stitched.

Avoid very small text and very fine lines

Thread has a minimum physical thickness no machine can get around: text below a certain size or a line that's too fine simply gets lost or turns into a clump of bunched thread when stitched. If your logo includes a small secondary slogan or text, consider whether it's essential in the embroidered version or better reserved for printed applications.

Avoid gradients, shadows and 3D effects

Colour gradients, drop shadows and relief or shine effects that look great on screen don't translate directly into thread stitches: embroidery works with flat, solid colours.
