The combination produces a viscoelastic material: partly viscous (it flows), partly elastic (it stretches without breaking). Here is the mechanism that explains everything: terpene-based resin systems have a glass transition temperature (Tg) โ€” the point at which they shift from behaving like a glassy solid to behaving like a sticky viscoelastic material โ€” which lies in the range of 19โ€“43ยฐC depending on the composition.

A study published in ACS Sustainable Chem. Eng. (2024, PMC11077580, DOI: 10.1021/acssuschemeng.3c08191) on terpene-based resin systems measured glass transition temperatures in the range of 19โ€“43ยฐC depending on the formulation. This range places the solid-glassy to viscoelastic material state transition exactly in the conditions of manual handling.

The Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation, well established in polymer physics, predicts that viscosity decreases exponentially as temperature rises above the Tg. Translated into practice: every time resin contacts the pad of your finger, it warms slightly, flows better, makes more contact with the microstructure of your skin, and adheres more.

Silicone: Ultra-Low Surface Energy

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which is the base polymer of silicone thimbles, is one of the materials with the lowest surface energy that exist among polymeric solids.

How to Clean the Thimbles

  • Hot water + washing-up liquid: Soap emulsifies the oily terpenes. Scrubbing under hot water (60โ€“70ยฐC max) is sufficient for most resins.
  • Isopropyl alcohol (IPA โ‰ฅ90%): For dry or concentrated residues. Leave for 30 seconds, scrub, rinse. Silicone withstands alcohol.
