The Material Changes Everything: GSM, Fibre and Burn
Before comparing brands, you need to understand what differentiates one paper from another at a chemical and physical level. Rolling paper is described by three key variables:
GSM (grams per square metre): the weight determines thickness, opacity and burn speed. Lower GSM = thinner paper and slower burn. Higher GSM = thicker paper with faster burn and more residue.
Base fibre: the fibre type affects flavour, porosity and ease of rolling. Rice has very short fibres that close the paper structure densely and restrict oxygen flow, slowing combustion by 15–30% compared to standard cellulose. Hemp has longer, more permeable fibres. Wood pulp cellulose burns fast and evenly but adds a subtle paper taste.
Gum: the adhesive strip determines how much saliva you need, what margin for error you have, and how secure the seal is. Not all gums are equal.
OCB: European Tradition since 1822
The initials OCB come from Odet-Cascadec-Bolloré, the names of the French paper mills where the brand was born in 1822. It is the quintessential European rolling paper, with over 200 years of history. Most recognisable varieties: OCB Classic (classic linen), OCB Slim and OCB Slim+ (ultra-thin).

RAW: The Unbleached Paper Revolution
RAW was born in 2005 when Josh Kesselman decided to challenge the bleached paper industry. The proposition was simple: an unbleached hemp paper, natural brown-beige in colour, that added no chemicals to the combustion process. Within a decade it became the world's best-selling paper in the premium segment.
RAW uses natural tree sap as adhesive, with a wider gum strip than competitors. Result: more adhesive area, more forgiving with excess moisture, and easier to seal for those new to rolling. Elements' sugar gum requires much more precision.

Elements: Rice Paper and Ultra-Slow Burn
Elements and RAW are siblings: the same founder, Josh Kesselman, but a different philosophy. While RAW bets on unbleached hemp, Elements is pure rice paper. The short fibres of rice close the paper structure densely, blocking oxygen flow and producing the slowest burn on the market. The result when burned correctly: a nearly residue-free black ash line.
Elements' sugar gum is thin and precise. Too little saliva and it doesn't stick; too much and the paper gets saturated and falls apart. RAW forgives excess saliva; Elements does not. Mistakes When Choosing Paper
Choosing by price alone. Rizla Blue and RAW cost under €1 in a short pack, but if the weight isn't compatible with your blend or technique, you waste twice as much fill. Paper is the smallest investment of each session.
Ignoring weight according to fill. With kief or fine blends, thick paper (standard Rizla Blue) adds too much paper taste. With moist or bulky fill, ultra-thin paper like Elements gets wet and tears. Match the GSM to the type of fill.
Buying by brand image. RAW sells its story very well — and it's a good paper. But OCB Slim+ or Elements objectively offer equal or better flavour and burn experience. Try before you commit.
Never changing size. King Size Slim is Europe's modern standard (110mm, narrow). Regular format (70mm) is too short for many styles. Experiment with size: it affects the experience more than it seems.
