2-piece grinders have no screen or kief catcher. 3-piece grinders have a collection chamber but no separate kief catcher. For maximum efficiency and kief collection, the 4-piece grinder is the recommended standard.
How to Use a Grinder Step by Step
Prepare the herb
Remove stems and seeds by hand. Break large nuggets into pieces similar in size to a corn kernel. Don't put very large whole pieces in: they overload and block the teeth.
Load the chamber
Place the herb around the central axis, not on top of it. The centre is where the pivot rotates — if you put material there, the grinder will jam. Fill to 60-70% of maximum capacity for an even grind.
First turn
Rotate 1-2 times in the normal direction to fix the herb. Then flip the grinder upside down and rotate 2-3 more times. This redistributes the material and prevents jams.
Complete the grind
Return to normal position and rotate 5-10 times with even pressure. The number of rotations determines texture: more rotations = finer grind.
Collect the material
Open the collection chamber. If any pieces are still large, close and give a few more turns. Use the scraper or a stiff card to gather the material in the chamber.
Check the kief
After several sessions, open the bottom chamber and collect the accumulated kief with the included scraper. Don't open it after every use — let it build up over time.
Flipping the grinder upside down before completing the grind is a technique few people know but which makes a clear difference. Gravity redistributes the herb towards the teeth instead of piling it in the centre, guaranteeing a more even grind with less effort.
How to Maximise Kief Collection
Kief is the most valuable by-product of the grinder. It consists of trichomes — the resin glands of the herb — that separate during grinding and pass through the screen. Maximising it requires technique.
Coin in the collection chamber: place a small clean coin on top of the screen. When you rotate, the coin vibrates and helps kief pass through to the lower chamber more efficiently.
Cold temperature: putting the grinder in the freezer for 20-30 minutes before grinding causes the trichomes to crystallise and separate more easily from the plant material.
Don't over-clean the screen: a light layer of kief helps filter. Only clean when the screen is visibly clogged.
Accumulation: kief builds up over time. It's not worth collecting it after every use. Wait until you have a visible layer before using it effectively.

Grinding too much breaks the plant material into a powder that clogs paper filters, blocks vaporiser mouthpieces and blocks screens. If you don't need a fine powder, 8-10 rotations is enough for most uses.
The 6 Most Common Mistakes
More herb doesn't mean more efficiency. The grinder jams, the teeth can't rotate properly and the grind is uneven. Maximum 60-70% capacity.
The centre is the rotation point. If there's herb there, it blocks the mechanism. Always place herb around the pivot, never on top of it.
Accumulated resin clogs the teeth and screen, reducing grinding performance and kief collection. Clean the grinder every 2-3 weeks with regular use.
Kief accumulates in very thin layers. If you open it after every session, you'll barely see anything. Leave it to build up for weeks for a useful amount.
Water mixed with resin creates a mixture that clogs even more. To clean, use isopropyl alcohol or freeze first so the resin is easily scraped off.
Plastic grinders contaminate the material with microparticles during grinding. Use anodised aluminium, zinc or stainless steel as a minimum.

Quick Maintenance Between Uses
1. Use the scraper to gather herb remains in the collection chamber before closing.
2. Tap the closed grinder gently on the table so loose kief falls to the bottom chamber.
3. If the teeth have visible residue, clean them with a fine-bristle brush or dry paintbrush.
