When to Know Your Grinder Needs Cleaning
Don’t wait until the grinder seizes up completely. There are early signs that performance is already dropping before the problem is obvious:
Signs it’s time to clean: pieces turn with more resistance than usual; ground material comes out wet or clumped instead of loose and granular; teeth are coated in dark, sticky resin; kief no longer falls through the screen when shaken; there’s a stale smell transferring to fresh material.
Kief is the most valuable by-product of the grinder, collecting in the bottom chamber separated by a steel or polyester mesh screen. A dirty grinder has a clogged screen: kief sticks instead of falling, and more is lost with every use. Cleaning the grinder on time means recovering that material before it becomes unusable.

No specialist products needed. Most of what works best is already at home or available from any pharmacy:

Don’t use water alone on metal grinders: it rusts the threads. Don’t use acetone or strong solvents on plastic or acrylic: they degrade them. Don’t put the grinder in the dishwasher.
Step-by-Step Guide: Basic Clean
Fully disassemble the grinder
Separate all pieces: lid, grinding chamber, collection chamber and kief chamber (if 4-piece). Do it over a white sheet of paper so you don’t lose any residue.
Collect residual kief before cleaning
Before applying anything, use a toothpick or the included scraper card to scrape kief from the bottom chamber and screen. Store it. This step comes first — if you clean before scraping, you lose the kief.
Dry-brush teeth and walls
Use the stiff brush to remove loose resin pieces from the teeth, walls and screen edges. Work dry first: more effective for residue that isn’t stuck down.
Apply isopropyl alcohol
Dip a swab or cloth piece in 90%+ alcohol and scrub all internal surfaces: teeth, walls, and especially the screen. Alcohol dissolves resin in seconds. For heavy build-up, leave it for 2-3 minutes before scrubbing.
Clear the screen with a toothpick
The screen is the most critical point. Push the toothpick through each hole in the screen (from both sides) to remove the resin plugs blocking kief passage. With fresh alcohol applied, this step goes quickly.
Dry and reassemble
Leave all pieces to dry for at least 10 minutes before reassembling. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates fast but threads must be completely dry to avoid oxidation. Reassemble and check pieces turn smoothly.
How to Recover Kief Without Losing Any
The cold technique is the most effective method for recovering built-up kief, especially in grinders that haven’t been cleaned for a while. It works because cold makes resin brittle so it breaks away from surfaces instead of staying stuck.
The cold technique
Fully disassemble the grinder. Place all pieces (kief chamber closed) in a sealed freezer bag. Put in the freezer for at least 30 minutes — the longer the better. Remove from freezer, shake the bag firmly for 30-60 seconds. Open over white paper. You’ll notice kief falling as fine powder and resin residue coming away much more easily.
If the screen has embedded kief that won’t shift with scraping, use a dry toothbrush after the freezing step and gently tap the back of the screen over white paper. The combination of cold + impact releases compacted kief without damaging the screen.
Deep Clean for Very Dirty Grinders
If you haven’t cleaned the grinder in months, a basic clean isn’t enough. Built-up resin forms a hard layer that alcohol alone won’t dissolve in a single application. The soak method is the solution:
Place all metal pieces in a small container and cover completely with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. Leave to soak for 20-30 minutes, occasionally agitating. The resin will start coming away on its own. After soaking, simple brushing removes practically everything. Rinse with water and dry completely before reassembling.
Soaking in alcohol is only safe for zinc, aluminium and stainless steel grinders. Wooden, acrylic or plastic grinders must not be submerged: alcohol warps acrylic and dries out wood. For these materials, use dry cleaning only plus a lightly moistened cotton swab.
Common Mistakes That Damage Grinders
Most grinders that stop working well aren’t broken — they’re poorly maintained. The most common errors:
Cleaning threads with water and leaving them wet. Water on zinc or aluminium threads causes oxidation. Even if the grinder looks dry outside, trapped moisture in the threads causes them to seize over time.
Using harsh solvents (acetone, WD-40) on any grinder. Acetone destroys acrylic and anodised coatings. WD-40 lubricates but leaves an oily residue that accumulates dust and resin faster.
Forcing stuck pieces instead of soaking. When the grinder is heavily seized by resin, forcing pieces can bend teeth or damage threads. Always soak first.
Not drying completely before storing. A grinder stored damp in a dark drawer is a perfect trap for oxidation and mould in organic residues.
