1. What DTF is and how the real process works
DTF stands for Direct to Film. It's a textile printing technique that, unlike embroidery, doesn't stitch the design with thread, and unlike screen printing, doesn't push ink directly onto the garment through a screen. DTF first prints the design onto a special polyester film and then, in a completely separate second step, transfers that design onto the garment using heat and pressure.
The real process, explained without marketing spin, has four stages:
Printing onto the film
A dedicated DTF printer prints the design in colour (CMYK) onto a PET film, and adds a layer of white ink as a base underneath the colours. That white base is what allows the design to show its true colours even on dark garments — something other digital printing techniques don't always handle well.
Applying adhesive powder
While the ink is still wet, a heat-fusible (hot-melt) adhesive powder is applied to the film, which sticks to the printed areas. This powder is what will later melt under heat and literally bond the design to the garment's fibre.
Curing the adhesive
The film with the ink and powder goes through a curing process (controlled heat, in a specific oven or tunnel) that partially melts the adhesive without transferring it yet. The result is a ready-to-transfer design sheet that can be stored and used later.
Heat transfer onto the garment
The film is placed on the garment and pressed with an iron or heat press at a controlled temperature and time. The heat fully melts the adhesive, bonding it to the fabric's fibres. When the film is peeled off — cold or hot depending on the film type used — the design is left transferred onto the garment, and in many cases a second pass with the press (without film) is applied to better fix the finish and give it a softer feel.
The final result is a very fine, flexible layer of ink with slight relief, bonded to the surface of the fabric — not an image melted into the fibre, nor a stitched thread. 2. Why DTF has grown so much in recent years
A few years ago, if you wanted a full-colour design on a garment, practical options were limited: screen printing made any design with more than two or three colours far more expensive, and textile vinyl became impractical and too layered-looking when the design had many shades. DTF has grown so fast because it fills exactly that gap, and it does so with several advantages that combine well together.
Full colour at no extra ink cost
Unlike screen printing, where every colour in the design means preparing an additional screen, DTF prints any number of colours, gradients or photographs in the same pass, without the process getting more expensive as colours increase.
Works on almost any fabric
DTF transfers well onto cotton, polyester, cotton-polyester blends and other fabrics where embroidery or screen printing have more limitations, precisely because it doesn't rely on the fabric absorbing ink the way other textile printing techniques do.
Adapts equally to light and dark fabrics
Thanks to the white ink base applied before the colour, the same design keeps its true colours on both a white t-shirt and a black hoodie, something that isn't always easy to achieve with other digital textile printing techniques.

Relative cost
For short runs or designs with many colours, DTF is usually more cost-effective than screen printing, because there are no screens to prepare. For very large runs of a one- or two-colour flat design, screen printing remains the most cost-efficient option, since that initial setup pays off better the more units you produce.
Durability
A well-applied, well-cared-for DTF holds up reasonably well to regular washing, but being a layer of transferred ink on the fabric's surface, it feels more plastic-like than embroidery and, after many washes or ironing at the wrong temperature, can crack or lose its sheen sooner than a well-executed embroidery. A well-cured screen print also usually ages better than a poorly applied DTF, though worse than embroidery on very intensively used pieces.

Of the four techniques, DTF best reproduces photographic designs, gradients and a high number of colours in the same piece. Embroidery and screen printing perform worse the more colours and fine detail a design has; textile vinyl, if the design has many colours, builds up overlapping layers that thicken the final feel.
If your design is a photograph, has gradients or many different colours, and you need to produce only a few units, DTF is usually the most sensible option. If the design is a one- or two-colour flat logo and the run is large, screen printing is more cost-effective. If you need maximum durability and a premium finish on a daily-use garment, embroidery is still superior on that specific point. If you just need to customise individual units with a name or number, textile vinyl is just as practical and sometimes cheaper. The right technique depends on your design, your quantity and the garment's real use, not on which one sounds trendier.
4. Which garments and fabrics DTF works best on
DTF has a reputation for "working on almost any fabric", and broadly speaking it's true that it performs better than other textile printing techniques across varied surfaces, but it's worth qualifying that honestly. It performs especially well on cotton, polyester and blends of both, which are the most common fibres in t-shirts, hoodies and sportswear, on both light and dark colours thanks to the process's white ink base.
On very stretchy or technical fabrics, the result depends on the transfer being applied at the correct temperature and pressure: a well-executed DTF adapts reasonably well to the stretch of a sports garment, but a very large, rigid design over an area that stretches a lot during movement can feel less flexible than the rest of the fabric. On very small or textured surfaces — fastenings, seams, curved areas — DTF's flat transfer has more difficulty than a technique that adapts piece by piece, like embroidery on a curved cap.
As a practical rule of thumb: for large, full-colour designs on cotton or blended t-shirts and hoodies, DTF is almost always a solid option. For small, curved surfaces like the front of a cap, or for very technical high-performance sports fabrics, it's worth also weighing screen printing, vinyl or embroidery depending on the specific case before deciding on the technique.
5. Washing care for a garment with DTF
The real lifespan of any textile print — DTF included — depends both on how it was applied and on how the garment is cared for afterwards. These are the general care guidelines that help a DTF design stay in good condition for as long as possible:
- Wash the garment inside out: this reduces direct friction between the printed area and the washing machine drum or other garments.
- Use cold or lukewarm water, never hot: excessive heat during washing softens the transfer's adhesive prematurely and speeds up its wear.
- Avoid the tumble dryer on high heat: if you need to use one, use a low-temperature setting; prolonged heat is one of the factors that most damages any transferred print.
- Don't iron directly over the design: if you need to iron the garment, do it inside out or place a protective cloth between the iron and the printed area.
- Avoid harsh detergents and bleach: bleaching agents and highly concentrated detergents can dull the design's colour over time.
- Let the garment dry fully before folding or storing it: storing a damp garment can make the design stick to other surfaces or leave marks.
This care logic isn't exclusive to DTF: washing inside out and avoiding excessive heat extends the life of any textile print, whether DTF, screen printing or vinyl. Embroidery is the only one of the four techniques that doesn't depend as much on this care, precisely because stitched thread doesn't crack or peel the way a transferred ink layer does.
6. Common mistakes when ordering DTF
- Ordering DTF for a very large run of a single-colour design: in that specific case, screen printing is usually more cost-effective because the setup cost pays off better across many units.
- Sending the design in low resolution: DTF faithfully reproduces the level of detail in the original file; a pixelated or insufficient-resolution image transfers just as pixelated.
- Not specifying the base garment's colour: although DTF works well on both light and dark garments thanks to the white base, knowing the garment colour from the start helps adjust the print file so the final colours stay true.
- Requesting a huge design on a very stretchy area without flagging the intended use: a high-stretch sports garment with a very large, rigid design can feel less flexible in that area; it's worth mentioning before production.
- Assuming DTF lasts exactly as long as embroidery: they're inherently different techniques (transferred ink versus stitched thread); a well-cared-for DTF lasts well, but you shouldn't expect the same long-term behaviour as embroidery on a very intensively used piece.
- Not asking about combining techniques in the same order: it's common and perfectly reasonable to combine DTF for the main full-colour design with embroidery or vinyl for other elements of the same project, instead of forcing a single technique for everything.
