Within our general guide to custom clothing and merchandising with no rigid minimum, scarves and fans are two pieces with very different usage logic, even though both share the same roots: Spanish popular festivals and summer. A neck scarf is worn throughout the whole event and works as collective identification; a fan is handed out, used for a while, and then kept as a keepsake. Understanding that difference is the first step to choosing what to order.
Neck scarf for a fiesta group or festival
The neck scarf identifies an entire group out on the street: every member of a fiesta club (peña), festival committee, brotherhood or group of friends wears it the same way during the street parade, the group meal or the festival's main events. It's customised in full colour with the crest, the group's name and, often, the edition year, and works as light, highly recognisable uniformity instead of a full garment.
Promotional or keepsake fan
The fan has a different use: it's a piece that's handed out and kept after the event, not a garment worn all day. It's used as a wedding favour, a summer-campaign corporate gift, a fair giveaway or a keepsake from a cultural association, and its surface — the folding leaf, in fabric or paper — allows full-colour design in a panoramic format very different from a textile garment.

2. Customisation technique: textile printing and fan ribs
Both pieces are customised with full-colour printing, but the working surface changes the technical approach in each case.
Textile printing on the scarf
The design is printed directly onto the scarf's fabric in full colour, which allows crests with several colours, gradients or complex illustrations to be reproduced without the limitations of flat screen-printed ink. Depending on the design, the print can cover the whole visible surface of the scarf or be concentrated on a specific area — a corner or the centre — something decided together with the artwork before production.
Printing on the fan's leaf and ribs
On the fan we distinguish two customisable surfaces: the leaf — the folding fabric or paper, with more surface available for the main design — and the ribs, where a small logo, a name or a printed or engraved date usually goes. Both parts don't always need customising: for a wedding favour or a corporate campaign it's common to reserve the leaf for the main illustration and leave the ribs plain or with a minimal detail.

4. Design: what to check before sending your file
Scarves and fans have very different surface formats from a t-shirt or hoodie, so it's worth checking these three points before sending us the final design.
Surface size
A neck scarf is usually square or rectangular and a fixed size, while a fan's leaf is a surface folded into pleats, wider than it is tall. The same design doesn't always adapt equally well to both formats, so we review the artwork's proportions before laying it out on the final piece.
Design orientation
On a fan, the design unfolds across the pleats when it's opened: badly oriented text or a logo can end up cut by the folds or hard to read when the piece is only partly open. On a scarf, orientation instead depends on how it will be worn — tied around the neck or folded into a triangle — and it's worth keeping in mind if the design includes legible text.
Background colour
A solid background colour on a scarf looks different on fabric than on screen, and on a fan the background colour interacts with the fabric's folds as the piece opens and closes. We recommend checking the colour on a real mockup before approving the full run, rather than approving based on the digital file alone.
If your design already works well on another piece — for example, the crest you already use on t-shirts or bunting for your group or committee — don't assume it transfers the same way to a scarf or a fan without adjustments. We review the adaptation with you before producing.
5. Common mistakes when customising scarves and fans
- Using the same file from another piece without adapting the format: a logo designed for a t-shirt or bunting doesn't always fit as well on a fan's elongated, folded surface.
- Not deciding how the scarf will be worn: tied around the neck or worn another way — it changes which part of the design ends up most visible once it's on.
- Forgetting the fan's ribs: leaving them blank when the project actually wanted a brand detail there too, or the opposite — overloading them when the leaf already carries the main design.
- Ordering it right before the event date: for both patron-saint festivals and weddings, it's worth confirming the order with enough lead time, especially for a large quantity.
- Not specifying the real number of attendees or members: the run size shapes the production process, so it's worth giving an accurate figure from the first contact.
