History of the Clipper Lighter: Born in Barcelona, Conquered the World

Flamagas: the company behind Clipper
It all starts in 1959. In Franco-era Barcelona, the Puig family founds Flamagas S.A. The Puig name was already known in perfumery —the same family behind Carolina Herrera and Paco Rabanne— but this branch chooses a different path: fire.
Flamagas’s early years are spent manufacturing metal lighters under the Flaminaire brand. The company survives and learns, accumulating manufacturing expertise that proves crucial years later.
Founded: 1959, Barcelona (Spain)
HQ: Barcelona, with factories in India (2001) and China (2004)
Parent holding: Grupo Exea (Flamagas, Puig, Uriage, Isdin 50%)
1972: the world’s first refillable plastic lighter
1972 is the turning point. Flamagas launches the world’s first refillable plastic lighter under the Clipper brand. Before this date the choice was binary: expensive refillable metal, or cheap disposable plastic. Clipper changes everything.
The Clipper’s logic was perfect: don’t throw away the lighter when the gas runs out, refill it. This idea was revolutionary in a market dominated by disposables. The consumer paid more upfront, but saved long-term —and the lighter had a history that disposables never can.
Enric Sardà’s design and technical innovations
Enric Sardà, a Barcelona-based industrial designer, conceives the Clipper’s characteristic shape: a slightly conical cylinder, ergonomic, fitting perfectly in a pocket or inside a pack of tobacco. The silhouette has not changed in fifty years.
The innovation nobody expected: the poker tool
The component housing the flint is removable. What nobody fully planned is that this extracted component has the perfect shape and size to function as a poker/packing tool for rolling: tamp tobacco, open the end of a joint, adjust paper. Smokers discovered this themselves, and it became part of the product’s identity.
1. Refillable plastic: first plastic lighter designed to be refilled with butane
2. Replaceable flint: the flint stone can be replaced without discarding the lighter
3. Integrated poker: the flint holder works as a rolling/packing tool
4. Adjustable flame: gas flow is adjustable, unlike many disposables

Clipper vs BIC: two business philosophies
| Feature | Clipper | BIC |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Barcelona, Spain (1972) | France (1973) |
| Model | Refillable, reusable | Disposable |
| Flint | Replaceable | Fixed |
| Poker tool | Built-in | No |
| Flame | Adjustable | Fixed (model dependent) |
| Waste | Minimal | One lighter per cycle |
| Customisation | Extensive | Limited |
| Annual production | ~450M units | ~1,500M units |
In the artisanal rolling world, preference for Clipper over BIC is almost universal for one reason: the built-in poker tool. No other mainstream lighter has this feature. For daily rollers, the Clipper isn’t just a lighter —it’s a tool. This is why headshops and paraphernalia stores stock Clippers.
Clipper and rolling culture
Limited editions —collaborations with artists, fashion brands, music festivals— have generated real collectorship. Collaborations with Bob Marley, surf brands, Primavera Sound in Barcelona have anchored Clipper in specific subcultures.
- The hand roller doesn’t want an anonymous disposable —they want something that reflects their approach
- The poker tool turns Clipper into a real accessory, not just a lighter
- Refillability fits the DIY philosophy of the artisanal smoker
- Limited editions let the lighter say something about the person carrying it
